UNUM May Have Violated Employee’s Rights When It Comes To Severance Packages

Jan 20, 2017

Unum Group may have violated wage and hour laws with its company’s policies regarding severance pay.

Nashville, TN, United States - January 19, 2017 /MarketersMedia/ —

News articles report that UNUM plans to move its IT operations from the United States to India. UNUM is a large, multi-billion-dollar Fortune 500 insurance company with its principal offices located in Chattanooga, Tennessee. As a result of its planned move, hundreds of UNUM employees stand to, or will, lose their jobs.

Though the loss of jobs and livelihoods is devastating, some believe that UNUM may have taken action that will cause employees even more pain.

It has been reported although UNUM has a severance pay policy, if an employee has received a reprimand or sanction, and is terminated during the time that the reprimand or sanction is in effect, UNUM’s policy is to deny the employee severance pay. As of late, some fear that UNUM has been actively looking for minor violations of company policy by employees. By finding a minor violation, UNUM will have no obligation to pay severance pay to employees who it plans to terminate shortly. This reported practice, though unconfirmed, would save UNUM millions as it leaves the shores of the United States, and leave these employees high and dry. In addition, it has been reported that UNUM did not enforce or, prior to now, even publicize to employees that these relatively minor acts violated company policy in the past.

We are trying to determine the facts and extent of UNUM’s practices in these matters.

We invite you to let us know what UNUM has done or is doing to you as it prepares to ship these jobs overseas.
We have no intention of using or revealing your name or identity, but if you prefer, you can use a pseudonym and send it to the email address listed below. When responding, do not use an UNUM email account, any UNUM computer or any UNUM equipment to send your information. We also ask that you use a personal, private email address.

With this information, we can examine the facts and consider what steps that may be taken to protect employees.
