New state-by-state analysis finds a $1,974 difference between California and Alabama, the most and least expensive states for a complete single dental implant.

Detroit, Michigan Oct 27, 2026 (Issuewire.com) - The average cost of a complete single dental implant varies by nearly $2,000 depending on where patients live, according to a new 2026 state-by-state analysis from Real Dental Costs.

The research, which compares observed average cash prices across all 50 U.S. states and Washington, D.C., found that California has the highest average dental implant cost at $5,733, while Alabama has the lowest at $3,759.

The $1,974 difference means the average price in California is approximately 52.5% higher than in Alabama.

With the national average standing at $4,507, the findings highlight substantial geographic differences in the cost of replacing a missing tooth.

The analysis is presented in the U.S. Dental Restorative Cost Index by State (2026), which maps average prices for a complete single dental implant across 51 U.S. markets.

California ranks as the most expensive state for dental implants

California tops the ranking with an average observed cash price of $5,733 for a complete single dental implant.

That is $1,226 above the national average and approximately 27.2% higher than the national benchmark.

The state's Restorative Cost Index stands at 127, compared with the national benchmark of 100. California also records a cost-of-living index of 137.6, providing additional context for its position among the highest-cost markets.

Other states and markets with average implant prices exceeding $5,000 include New York at $5,565, Hawaii at $5,460, Alaska at $5,450, and Washington, D.C., at $5,250.

Massachusetts and New Jersey also feature among the higher-cost markets, with average prices of $5,145 and $5,040, respectively.

Alabama has the lowest average dental implant cost

At the other end of the ranking, Alabama records the lowest average price at $3,759.

This is $748 below the national average and approximately 16.6% lower than the national benchmark.

Alabama's Restorative Cost Index is 83, compared with the national benchmark of 100. Its cost-of-living index is 88.8.

The other four lowest-cost states are Arkansas at $3,833, Mississippi at $3,885, Kentucky at $3,948, and West Virginia at $3,969.

Five states therefore have average observed implant prices below $4,000.

The five most and least expensive states for dental implants

The research identified the following markets at the top and bottom of the 2026 ranking.

The five most expensive markets:

  • California -- $5,733

  • New York -- $5,565

  • Hawaii -- $5,460

  • Alaska -- $5,450

  • Washington, D.C. -- $5,250

The five least expensive states:

  • Alabama -- $3,759

  • Arkansas -- $3,833

  • Mississippi -- $3,885

  • Kentucky -- $3,948

  • West Virginia -- $3,969

The results show that several markets have average prices well above $5,000, while others remain below $4,000.

Some states sit close to the national average

Not every state falls at either extreme of the ranking.

Several markets record prices close to the national average of $4,507. Arizona has an observed average price of $4,490, while Florida and Montana both record $4,515.

Colorado follows at $4,538, with Virginia at $4,578.

These figures show that geographic differences aren't simply a divide between the most and least expensive states. Some markets sit close to the national benchmark, while others deviate considerably from it.

Why do dental implant costs vary by state?

Dental implant prices can vary for several reasons, including local operating expenses, labor costs, provider pricing, the cost of living, and the complexity of individual treatments.

The type of implant and restoration required can also affect the final price. Some patients may need additional procedures, while insurance coverage and financing arrangements can influence their out-of-pocket costs.

For this reason, state averages provide a useful benchmark for understanding geographic pricing patterns but should not be treated as an individual treatment quote.

Patients considering dental implants should consult a licensed dental professional for an assessment, an individualized treatment plan, and a full cost estimate.

About the research

The analysis uses data from the U.S. Dental Restorative Cost Index by State (2026), Version 2.0.0, published by Real Dental Costs.

The dataset contains observed average cash prices for a complete single dental implant across all 50 U.S. states and Washington, D.C.

According to the research documentation, the implant state rankings were independently validated against the ASQ360°/CareCredit Average Procedural Cost Study, with a reported Spearman rank correlation of 0.945 across the 51 markets.

The dataset is published under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0) licence.

The national average of $4,507 is used as the benchmark for the percentage comparisons in the analysis. All prices represent observed averages and may differ from the amounts individual patients are quoted by dental providers.
