Mahmoud Abbas postpones Palestinian legislative elections another year

RAMALLAH, West Bank — President Mahmoud Abbas postponed what would have been the first Palestinian elections in nearly 20 years, issuing a decree on Friday to further delay voting for the Palestinian Legislative Council almost another year. Rather than take place as scheduled next month, the decree pushes the elections back to Sept. 11, 2027, according to WAFA, the official Palestinian news agency. Presidential elections, which have not taken place for more than two decades, are scheduled for the same day. The postponement leaves entrenched Palestinian leaders unchallenged and threatens to further erode the Palestinian Authority’s credibility among ordinary Palestinians and donor countries who fund it. CAIRO — The latest attack on the international airport in Saudi Arabia's capital of Riyadh killed 12 people and injured over 300 others, civil aviation authorities said Sunday, with some in critical condition. Poland's interior ministry said Sunday that the country's Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz may have been targeted by assassination attempts. VATICAN CITY — Pope Leo XIV announced Sunday he will undergo surgery in the coming days to remove a nodular lesion on his lung that was recently discovered during medical checks. The 71-year-old pope said the nodule was found at an early stage and was “circumscribed” or well-localized.
