WASHINGTON — U.S. President Donald Trump said in a social media post on Saturday that he plans to appoint a new artificial intelligence adviser, known as an "AI czar," and create an "AI force," though he did not provide details about either initiative or how they would be implemented. Fears are growing in Washington among lawmakers about the risks posed by AI technology on humans and property. Earlier this month, former Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon said that "people building AI earnestly believe that it could kill us all by the end of the decade." Trump has repeatedly downplayed concerns about AI and argued that additional regulation is unnecessary. "We will not in any way hinder or stifle the Growth of this incredible Industry," Trump wrote on Truth Social, his social media platform. "Rather, we will cherish it, help it, and watch over it, as it grows! However, we will also be looking for BAD, and we can do that, very easily, with our already existing Criminal and Civil Justice System." If Trump follows through on the pledge, it would be his second AI czar. Venture capitalist Dav
MOSCOW — Ukraine launched what Moscow's mayor called the biggest ever drone attack on the Russian capital on Sunday in what he said was an unsuccessful attempt to disrupt the final day of a parliamentary election that President Vladimir Putin has cast as a test of support for Russia's war in Ukraine. Two people were killed in the surrounding Moscow region and the capital's oil refinery — which has been hit before — was struck, local authorities said. Reuters witnesses heard blasts in Moscow and saw plumes of smoke billowing from the refinery site. It was not clear what damage the facility had sustained. There was no immediate comment from Ukraine. "The biggest attack by enemy drones has been repelled. Since yesterday, more than 1,600 drones have been shot down across all fronts. Of these, 450 were approaching Moscow," Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said in a statement on Telegram. One of the drones had struck a residential building, but none of its residents had lost their lives, he said. "This unprecedented attack was clearly planned with the aim of disrupting the elections. PHILADELPHIA — Pop star Ed Sheeran apologized on Saturday for his handling of a controversy that erupted this week when rapper Macklemore was removed as an opening act over comments on Palestine. Breaking his silence on the issue, the British singer decried Israel's treatment of residents in Gaza as "unjustifiable." "I've had to take and make difficult decisions and I am making mistakes and I'm so, so sorry," Sheeran told an audience in Philadelphia, where he performed for the first time since Macklemore was taken off the concert tour. At the start of the concert at Lincoln Financial Field, Sheeran called the October 2023 Hamas attack that killed 1,200 Israelis "horrific." But he called Israel's subsequent war, which has killed thousands in Gaza and displaced almost all of the population, "catastrophic and unjustifiable and disproportionate." Sheeran also decried "systemic injustice" in the West Bank, where Israel's right-wing coalition government has allowed a massive expansion of Jewish settlements. The pop star's opening statement on Saturday offered a stark change from his statement
