Indigenous Brazilians gather to protest outside Congress

Apr 24, 2019

BRASILIA, Brazil — More than 1,000 indigenous Brazilians gathered outside Congress on Wednesday for an annual three-day campout to protest what they see as rollbacks of indigenous rights under President Jair Bolsonaro. Tents dotted the congressional building's lawn, where indigenous leaders sang, danced and sold crafts while wearing traditional feathered headdresses with their faces painted red and black. The event, known as the Free Land Encampment, began its 15th edition with a sense of animosity toward Bolsonaro, a far-right politician whose policies are called by indigenous leaders the biggest setbacks to their peoples' rights in recent history. "This government came...

IndyCar hoping debris deflector helps protect drivers

Apr 24, 2019

INDIANAPOLIS — Will Power got his first real glimpse at IndyCar's new debris deflector Wednesday. He is still getting used to the small piece on the front of his race car. The defending Indianapolis 500 champion and 2014 series champion was one of more than two dozen drivers who spent Wednesday testing the safety device designed to reduce the risk of head injuries in the series that features open cockpits. "You notice it," the Australian driver said during a rain delay at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. "But you really need to be in it at top speeds, following cars. Anything you...

Occidental tries to outbid Chevron for Anadarko Petroleum

Apr 24, 2019

NEW YORK — A bidding war is breaking out over Anadarko Petroleum, with Occidental making an offer that it says is about a 20% premium to Chevron's deal announced earlier this month, a rare move not often seen in the U.S. oil industry. Houston-based Occidental Petroleum Corp. said the proposed combination would bolster its position in the Permian Basin in Texas and New Mexico, where it is already the largest oil producer. "We have been focused on Anadarko for several years because we have long believed that we are ideally positioned to generate compelling value from a combination with them,"...

Jaguar recovery plan envisions sprawling habitat areas

Apr 24, 2019

TUCSON, Ariz. — A plan by wildlife officials to bolster the endangered jaguar population in the U.S. Southwest and Mexico by establishing two sprawling habitat areas drew criticism Wednesday from environmental groups. The final recovery plan for the large cats was released by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. It calls for one habitat area from western Mexico into southern Arizona and southwest New Mexico. The other would stretch from eastern Mexico to northern Argentina. Mexico as well as countries in Central and South America would be primarily responsible for monitoring jaguar movements within their territory, according to the plan....

Business group: Nicaragua's economy in 'free fall'

Apr 24, 2019

MANAGUA, Nicaragua — Nicaragua's economy is in "free fall" a year after anti-government protests were violently repressed by the government and its supporters, the country's leading business association said Wednesday. Sectors such as tour operators, auto dealers and medical equipment providers have seen their sales fall 77.5%, 75% and 53.5%, respectively, in the past year, the Superior Council of Private Business said. "We thought we were on the precipice, but the latest figures show that we lost our footing and are in free fall," said Guillermo Jacoby, an official with the association. Protests began in April 2018 against cuts to...
