Scope

- To foster the use of electronic payments and realize the need for instant payments in the Netherlands, the Dutch Payment Association is now working towards building infrastructure for real-time instant payments. The development of the system began in 2015 and is now in the developmental phase, and is scheduled to go live by May 2019. All major Dutch banks have decided to contribute towards its development. Once implemented, the new instant payment system will enable individuals to transfer funds within five seconds with no amount limit.
- To benefit from a growing preference for alternative payments, banks and payment service providers are launching new solutions. In August 2017, de Volksbank introduced its mobile wallet allowing users to make NFC-based mobile payments at POS terminals. The wallet, which is managed by G+D Mobile Security, supports both Visa and Mastercard debit cards issued by the bank. Previously, ABN Amro had launched its digital ABN wallet in November 2016. This was followed by the launch of Seqr by Swedish mobile payment (m-payment) solution provider Seamless in March, and the ING mobile wallet by ING Bank.

- Migration towards contactless is expected to be the next trend in the Netherlands. According to the Dutch Payments Association, the number of contactless payments in 2016 increased by almost five times to 630 million payments, compared to 135 million in 2015. In December 2016, 24% of all debit card payments were contactless. In addition, the acceptance of contactless cards is well-developed with two thirds of all payment terminals in the Netherlands enabled for contactless payment, compared with one third in 2015. All terminals are required to be equipped for contactless payments by 2020. To capitalize on the increasing acceptance of contactless technology, Rabobank in collaboration with mobile network operator KPN announced an NFC-enabled m-payment option in January 2016.

Confusion and uncertainty at the border after Trump acts

Jun 21, 2018

McALLEN, Texas — The federal government wrestled with the fallout Thursday over President Donald Trump's move to stop separating families at the border, with no clear plan to reunite the more than 2,300 children already taken from their parents and Congress again failing to take action on immigration reform. In a day of confusion and conflicting reports, the Trump administration began drawing up plans to house as many as 20,000 migrants on U.S. military bases. But it was not immediately clear whether those beds would be for children or for entire families. At the same time, the Justice Department went...

They included electro artists Kavinsky and Busy P, who are regarded as global ambassadors of the house music genre known as French Touch. French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife, Brigitte, made a brief appearance to shake hands...

Neymar to start in unchanged Brazil team to face Costa Rica

Jun 21, 2018

ST. PETERSBURG, Russia — Neymar will start for Brazil in a mostly unchanged lineup against Costa Rica on Friday at the World Cup. Although Brazil coach Tite said Neymar still needs time to reach peak shape, he insisted he is not endangering the striker's health. "Yes, he will be playing. There's no sacrifice here," Tite said through a translator Thursday. "We want to win but the coach is not going to play around with a player's health, the price would be too high to pay." Tite was expected to use the same 11 players that were held to a 1-1...

What's that extra in my online cart? Soon, maybe a sales tax

Jun 21, 2018

NEW YORK — Attention shoppers: You may soon be paying more taxes on what you put in your online cart. The Supreme Court ruled Thursday that states can require online retailers to collect sales tax on purchases that come from states where they don't have any shops, offices or warehouses. Before that, retailers didn't have to collect state sales taxes if it was shipping items to someone in a state where the business didn't have a physical presence. Shoppers were generally supposed to pay the sales tax to the state themselves, but most didn't, says Gerald Storch, who was CEO...

Judge, Andujar HR, Yankees top Mariners 4-3 for 3-game sweep

Jun 21, 2018

NEW YORK — Aaron Boone bristles at the notion his New York Yankees are all or nothing, built entirely on home runs. "I think it's a silly argument," the manager said. "That does bother me, actually." Maybe, but it's sure a quick way to light up the scoreboard. Aaron Judge and Miguel Andujar hit two-run homers off James Paxton in the first inning that sent the Yankees over the Seattle Mariners 4-3 on Thursday for a three-game sweep. Luis Severino and the Yankees boosted the best record in the majors to 50-22. They've won four in a row and 17...
