The US Department of Education s What Works Clearinghouse (WWC) education research initiative states that the most important goal for literacy instruction is to increase student s ability to comprehend difficult text. It provides the teacher with a clear focus and understanding of the areas the student may be having trouble in.

The Commonwealth Online Learning Institute s strategy for vocabulary literacy is built on three pillars based on the WWC goal Teach to Learn, Teach to Understand, and Learning & Understanding Content. These three strategies are designed to optimize the learning and engagement process between teachers and students with a view to improving reading ability, problem-solving skills, and strengthening decision-making.

The Boston vocabulary literacy online institute emphasizes the need to help new independent readers by choosing favorite books as an approach to vocabulary development. The institute also recommends that educators tap into cultural backgrounds to help children identify different words for a specific object, progress to understanding content, and teach methods of literary self-expression.

The institute offers facilitated courses such as Building Vocabulary With State Standards and self-paced SP Academic And Domain Specific Vocabulary . These courses are aimed to train and empower educators to help their students develop reading comprehension and communication skills and encourage word-learning and usage strategies.

According to a spokesperson for the Boston online education resource center, We look forward to helping teachers increase their students engagement in the learning process and are happy to recommend these strategies through our courses.

The Commonwealth Online Learning Institute is supported by the Stratford Foundation, an educational resource nonprofit that funds and operates the Commonwealth Learning Center and the Professional Training Institute. The Commonwealth Learning Online Institute is designed as an online learning resource for teachers of schoolchildren.

Seoul says some N. Korean officials back at liaison office

Mar 25, 2019

SEOUL, South Korea — South Korea said some North Korean officials returned to an inter-Korean liaison office on Monday, three days after the North abruptly withdrew its entire staff citing unspecified instructions from "higher-level authorities." It wasn't immediately clear why North Korea sent some workers back to the office or whether it would restore a full staff. The North's decision to withdraw its staff on Friday came a week after its vice foreign minister threatened to pull out of nuclear negotiations with the United States following the collapse of a nuclear summit last month between leader Kim Jong Un and...

Ukrainian workers, seeing little hope at home, head abroad

Mar 25, 2019

TERESIN, Poland — Not long ago, Andriy Lytvynenko was fighting Russian-backed rebels in eastern Ukraine. These days the Ukrainian war veteran drives a trolley up and down aisles of a supermarket warehouse in rural Poland and loads it with grocery items. Unable to support his wife and three children as a driver at home in Ukraine, he recently left for the better pay offered in neighboring Poland. "We fought in the war to make things better, but nothing has changed," the 36-year-old veteran, wearing a safety vest and helmet, said as he worked. "Friends die and that's it. And everything...

Russian lawmaker cheers findings of Mueller's report

Mar 25, 2019

MOSCOW — A senior Russian lawmaker has welcomed the findings of special counsel Robert Mueller's report on Russian involvement in the U.S. presidential election, saying this gives the countries a chance to mend ties. Konstantin Kosachev, chairman of the foreign affairs committee in the upper chamber of the Russian parliament, said in a social media post on Monday that Mueller's probe was accompanied by "two years of incessant lies," but proved that there was no collusion, something that "we in Russia knew from the start." Mueller's report found no evidence that U.S. President Donald Trump's campaign conspired with Russian officials...

Gaza rocket strikes home in central Israel, 7 wounded

Mar 25, 2019

KFAR SABA, Israel — An early morning rocket fired from the Gaza Strip struck a house in central Israel on Monday, wounding seven people and prompting Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to cut short a trip to Washington. The developments set the stage for a potential major conflagration, shortly before Israel's upcoming elections. The rocket attack destroyed a residential home in the community of Mishmeret, north of the city of Kfar Saba, wounding six members of the family. The Magen David Adom rescue service said it treated seven people overall, including two women who were moderately wounded. The others, including two...

Medicare for all legislation has thorny issues

Mar 25, 2019

WASHINGTON — The "Medicare for All" legislation that's become a clarion call for progressives has two little-noticed provisions that could make it even more politically perilous for 2020 Democratic presidential candidates. The legislation from White House hopeful Sen. Bernie Sanders, along with a similar measure in the House, lifts curbs on government health insurance for people in the country illegally and revokes longstanding restrictions on taxpayer-funded abortions. Embracing the changes will give Democratic candidates a boost with the party's liberal base in a wide-open primary fight. But such divisive issues could complicate things for an eventual nominee seeking voters in...
