Kenny Slaught Pushes for More Participants in Hospice Mentorship Program

Many of the programs at the organization focus on the needs of children.

Santa Barbara, CA - May 16, 2018 /MarketersMedia/ —

California-based philanthropist Kenny Slaught is proud of the work that is done in the Hospice Center of Santa Barbara, especially its latest I Have a Friend Mentorship Program helping those in the late stages of life. In keeping with his altruistic pursuit, Hiles has been a long-time supporter of Hospice of Santa Barbara and its I Have a Friend Mentor Program. To raise awareness, Slaught has recently promoted the program on his blog at KennySlaught.com.

Hospice of Santa Barbara provides a wide range of services not just for individuals facing terminal and chronic illness, but also for their families. Many of the programs at the organization focus on the needs of children as they struggle with the impending or recent passing of a loved one. About 20 percent of children experience the death of a loved one before they turn 18, and one in 20 children must face the loss of one or both parents before they reach adulthood. Hospice of Santa Barbara endeavors to provide individuals in these situations with free support through numerous programs. This support helps individuals cope with grief to avoid or mitigate depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

“When children lose a loved one, it can feel like their lives will never be the same again. Their grief may seem insurmountable,” states Kenny Slaught. To combat this impression, the I Have a Friend mentor program pairs children and adolescents in this situation with a trained adult volunteer who experienced a similar loss at a young age. This volunteer serves as a companion throughout the grief process and provides a truly sympathetic point of view. The relationship that is built through this program often becomes indispensable as the child continues to face hurdles for several years.

Children who experience loss can feel paralyzed and overwhelmed. Many children in this situation may act out and teens may engage in risky behaviors, such as self-medication or self-mutilation. The I Have a Friend program provides them with an alternative and shows them that they can overcome their grief and pain and lead fulfilling, happy lives, just as the adult volunteers have. These volunteers understand the importance of open communication and work to help program participants become more resilient.

Sep 24, 2018

BEIJING — X-Men star Fan Bingbing's Beijing management office is dark and abandoned. Her birthday passed almost unremarked in China's hyper-adrenalized social media environment. For one of China's best known stars and a rising Hollywood actress, Fan's vanishing is stunning, coming amid vague allegations of tax fraud and possibly other infractions that could have put her at odds with Chinese authorities. Fan has starred in dozens of movies and TV series in China and is best known internationally for her role as Blink in 2014's "X-Men: Days of Future Past," a cameo in the Chinese version of "Iron Man 3,"...

Sep 24, 2018

AHVAZ, Iran — Iran was holding funerals Monday for the victims of the weekend terror attack on a military parade in the southwestern city of Ahvaz, the deadliest attack in the country in nearly a decade. Thousands of mourners gathered at the city's Sarallah Mosque on the Taleghani junction, carrying caskets in the sweltering heat. Others, mainly young people wearing ethnic clothes of the region's Arab minority, held large photographs of those slain at Saturday's parade in Ahvaz, the Khuzestan provincial capital, where militants disguised as soldiers had opened fire at marching troops and onlookers. Of the 25 people killed,...

China hikes tariffs on US imports as trade row intensifies

Sep 24, 2018

BEIJING — China raised tariffs Monday on thousands of U.S. goods in an escalation of its fight with President Donald Trump over technology policy and accused Washington of bullying Beijing and damaging the global economy. The General Administration of Customs said it started collecting additional taxes of 5 and 10 percent on $60 billion of goods at noon. That coincided with the time for Trump's planned tariff hike on $200 billion of Chinese imports to take effect, but there was no immediate U.S. government confirmation it was collecting the higher charges. The two governments imposed 25 percent penalty taxes on...

MOSCOW — Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny was released from jail on Monday at the end of a 30-day sentence for staging an unsanctioned protest — and then immediately detained again. A police officer approached him and took him away just as he came out of a detention center in Moscow at daybreak to be greeted by supporters and the media. Navalny has been the driving force behind a recent series of anti-government rallies that were held in dozens of cities and towns across Russia's 11 time zones. Navalny's spokeswoman, Kira Yarmysh, said on Monday Navalny is facing charges of...
